“You’re not quite there yet.” Daniel rearranged the blanket to fully cover Dana to her toes, and Angela lowered the one she’d held up.

Alan wasn’t sure whether to be relieved or not.

Dana firmly grasped one of his hands.

He kissed the side of her head. “You’re doing great.”

“If you guys don’t stop saying that, I’m gonna hit one of you,” she grumbled. “I’m not doing anything but making myself not scream when the pain hits.”

He chuckled. “Trust me. If everyone in the room knew that, their ear drums would thank you.”

“Not funny.” She giggled. Her breath caught, and her fingers tightened on his hand.

“Found them!” a man’s voice hollered. “Emergency flashlights. Two of them. Wait. They’re dead.”

A couple of small lights danced on the far side of the room.

Another male said, “Those wind up. Turn the crank for a minute or two. I use the same kind when I go camping.”

“Oh.”

A faint whir-whir-whir crept across the room.

Alan nuzzled the side of Dana’s head. “How are you holding up?”

“Okay. With your help. Just don’t go anywhere, or these people’s ears will never recover from my assault.” Humor laced the soft words.

He chuckled. “Glad to see your sense of humor’s intact.”

“I thought you wanted me to be more dignified.”

“Yeah, well, maybe I need to rethink that. You too dignified would be boring. Can’t have that. My life wouldn’t be the same.”

She laughed softly then gasped, held her breath, and began to pant again.

Alan scowled. “Daniel?”

“Yes?”

“How close are her contractions?”

“We’re down to four minutes.”

Oh, boy....

The whirring sound stopped, and a light flared, followed by another, almost glaringly bright for eyes accustomed to darkness. Alan squinted. His eyes adjusted quickly, and he glanced around, startled to realize Paul stood within arm’s reach.

“Is everyone else okay?” Dana asked as tension eased from her body.

“I think so.” Alan met Paul’s gaze. “Anyone else having trouble?”

“No.” Paul smiled weakly and shook his head. “Other than a few heart palpitations, everyone seems fine. A couple of the gals wore thin dresses and had to bundle up in blankets.” A faint grin emerged. “Women aren’t the most sensible creatures when it comes to choice of attire.”

Annoyance flashed through Alan, and he barely restrained a scowl. Did the man ever say anything complimentary about the opposite sex?

Dana snorted. “You’re far too right, I’m afraid. If I’d had any sense, I’d have worn a pantsuit and warmer shoes.”

“Thank heavens, you didn’t,” Daniel remarked. “We’d have to half-strip you for delivery. A dress is much easier to work with. Trust me.”

“True,” she mumbled. Dana’s breath hissed through her teeth. “Uh oh.”

“What?” Alan barely kept his voice steady as worry plowed through him. Help us out here, Lord. Keep us all calm. Especially me and Dana.

“My water just broke.”

Alan swallowed hard.

Daniel moved into position at Dana’s feet. “Okay, Dana, let me take a look.”

“I’ll deal with the blanket this time.” Paul gently took it from Angela’s hand.

Alan bristled.

The man stretched out the blanket and turned his back to Dana, blocking the view of everyone in the room.
